With the latest version of the UDE® Universal Debug Engine from PLS Programmierbare Logik & Systeme, system developers can use this highly intuitive and user-friendly tool for debugging, tracing, and testing the new STM32G5 MCU series from STMicroelectronics.

The STM32G5 series is an advanced addition to the widely adopted STM32 family of microcontrollers from STMicroelectronics. Based on Arm® Cortex®-M33, the STM32G5 series is designed for high-performance mixed-signal applications. The series combines a rich analog and control feature set, advanced built-in security, and a strong ecosystem to support real-time digital power and high-end motor control applications

To save software developers time and effort early in the design-in phase, PLS has seamlessly integrated the Arm® CoreSight™-based debug and trace functions of the STM32G5 series into UDE’s modern and user-friendly debugger environment. Predefined target configurations help users to establish a reliable connection between UDE and the MCU. The setup of the debug session requires minimal effort, allowing users to quickly focus on debugging or their specific test task. For subsequent development steps, UDE utilizes program trace information captured by the STM32G5’s Arm® CoreSight™ Embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM). This enables non-intrusive runtime analysis, including program execution visualization, profiling, and code coverage.

For applications running under the FreeRTOS real-time operating system, the UDE FreeRTOS awareness add-in provides debugger support for operating system-specific objects and structures. For automated debugging and software testing, the UDE Software API provides all the necessary functions and interfaces to remotely control the debugger using user scripts or third-party test tools. The UDE Software API is not dependent on any specific scripting language, allowing developers to use any language they choose.

Fast and reliable communication between the UDE debugger running on the PC and the STM32G MCU is ensured by either the UAD2pro, UAD2next, or UAD3+ devices from the Universal Access Device family, in combination with the appropriate target adapter for JTAG or Serial Wire Debug (SWD). For recording the trace data captured by the ETM, the UAD2next provides 512 MB of trace memory, while the UAD3+ offers up to 4 GB. To download trace data from the STM32G5, the UAD2next is expanded with a plug-in trace module and a device-specific trace adapter. The modular designed UAD3+ system uses a separate Trace Pod for this purpose.

“As a long-standing ST Authorized Partner, PLS has always strived to provide system developers with a mature debugging, tracing, and testing tool – optimally tailored to the specific features of the respective MCU – even before a new microcontroller is widely launched on the market. The fact that we have once again succeeded in doing so for the new STM32G5 MCU series underscores PLS’s close collaboration with ST,” says Jens Braunes, Product Marketing Manager at PLS.

“Developers can fully rely on PLS’s high-quality debugging, system analysis, and test tools for professional application development for the STM32G5,” says Maxime Belaval, Microcontroller Ecosystem Marketing Manager at ST. “This represents significant added value for both ST and our customers.”
